Film Viewing Practice Essay "Agent Carter"
In the 5-minute clip marvel uses a variety of different camera shots, angles, movement and composition, editing, sound, and mise-en-scène. All these different things all help the movie portray what they want to portray and how they want the audience to feel while watching the movie. The first thing is camera shots, the first ones that I noticed was the close shot of the two main character to make things more dramatic. After this there is a close-up shot of captain America putting a picture of the women (agent carter) by a dial as a sense of honor to show how much he loves her before I think he takes his life in an act of heroism. Next after that there is a Head-on shot to make it every more dramatic and to show the ship Captain America is flying and probably going to sacrifice himself in. During all this the editing technique that is being used is contrasted to show how hectic it is for Captain America while how somewhat calming it is for agent carter or rather sad it is. The contrast just shows the connection between the two and how they’re going through the same thing just in different ways and in different settings. The sound they are using during this a very sad and ominous music that just affects the viewers to make them sad about the situation also. It than cuts to an establishing shot or long shot to show of the new settings a year later. This help the viewer follow along with what is going on because from this shot you can infer that the new setting is in New York because of the shot showing some of the Brooklyn bridge. Before the camera even entered the building full of agents the sound switched straight to a direct sound of the loud beeping of a phone call which leads to a mission that the agents must carry out. After the agents that were assigned Agent Carter is upset because she hasn’t been set out. While talking to the main guy its mostly close shot but then there is a over the shoulder shot to give the audience a point of view of what the main character is looking at. There is no real sound except direct sound of the characters talking. The costumes or appearance shows that the decade of which this movie is around the 1900 like 50’s or 60’s. After the conversation there is a small Dolly shot that shows how distrust or frustrated agent carter is that the head honcho won’t give her any work besides paperwork. After the three agents get back from there is sound perspective of the agents telling the head man that they basically didn’t carry out the mission while this is going there is a man who shows up during an over the shoulder shot to show how Agent Carter is being mistreated and used a just a person who does paperwork and not a agent. Soon when everyone leaves there is this extreme close up of the phone going off to show that this is a call to action for Agent Carter and for her time to shine.
